Have you ever found yourself admiring the way someone does something? Quite frequently I seem to see people who are truly masterful in some aspect of what they do. And yet, in their personal lives, they may be in a complete mess. How can this be? Perhaps this sounds like you? And how do you begin to sort out the way ahead?
After working with students and counseling clients using writing and literature over a span of nearly thirty years I came to see how awareness of stages on the path to self-realization and mastery could be a useful tool in overcoming obstacles to growth.
Again and again people ask the same questions:
Where am I in my life journey?
+
How can I navigate successfully to where I need to go?
In The Six Archetypal Stages of spiritual development we see in literature can be a valuable tool in progressing on our own life journey. All the great literature of the Western world echoes these six precise stages through which the main characters have to move before their life trajectory could be completed. It surprised me to discover that it was always the same six stages, always in the same order, always facing the same tests—so I wrote this book.
These six archetypal stages are metaphors for the mileposts we can attain as we go through our lives - if we're alert.
The more I looked into it the more ubiquitous the scheme seemed to be, until we reached the literature of more modern times. Here the main characters are lucky if they get halfway through before the authors pull out and end the stories.
Perhaps modern literature lets us down, leaving us without the guidance previous generations relied upon.
Stories We Need to Know is now out from Findhorn Press.

What are the Six Archetypes?
They are, simply:
The Innocent
The Orphan
The Pilgrim
The Warrior-Lover
The Monarch
The Magician
You'll find that the main character of every 'great' story in the Western Canon is invited to undertake a symbolic, spiritual journey, and along the way he, or she, has to achieve these mileposts.
So here's the question to consider:
Where are you in your life journey?
