It's clear that you 'got' the major ideas in the book at a vital and powerful level, and since we all write in order to be understood I can only say I'm hugely happy that the book felt useful and true to you! The Gauguin is a pretty mind-boggling canvas, isn't it? It felt as if, when I saw it, it had been waiting for me to catch up to it so it could whisper in my ear. I was fortunate. I got to the MFA very early and ran through the gallery so I could have a few minutes alone with it and allow it work its magic.... All I had to do was listen. Yours with a smile, Allan Dear Mary Lou,

Comment on Politics (and you thought I’d steer clear of this one…) by Mary Lou Shields http://allanhunter.net/blog/2008/08/30/politics-and-you-thought-id-steer-clear-of-this-one/#comment-3662 Sat, 06 Sep 2008 12:20:37 +0000 http://allanhunter.net/blog/2008/08/30/politics-and-you-thought-id-steer-clear-of-this-one/#comment-3662 What I noticed most about each convention was the use of narrative to market the candidates. I felt it myself and Gurgen, Wallace, and Begala confirmrd it on CNN. In that sense, McCain is a triumph: from Innocent to Hero. His story is courageous. (Victor Lazlo and thensome.) But because this was a political campaign, the story was repeated so as to almost trivialize seven years in a tin box with a light on for 24/7 with the isolation interrupted only for torture and beatings. Did you notice in these "narratives" the importance of Mother? Obama's and McCain's? Tributes to both were moving - McCain's there to enjoy them, Obama's gone young. I'm not sure if America has had two opposing candidates for president each of whom have written a memoir. Does anyone know? Obama took a "bullet" for his when Sarah Palin said, "Note that Senator Obama has written two memoirs but no major legistaltion." Ouch! That said, I flung myself through "The Six Archetypes of Love" cover to cover with abandon. I just HAD to see where you were going. (Or, should I say, where "we" were going.) That done, I am back at the beginning quiet in the knowledge that I'll end up with Gauguin. Luckily the triptych resides in Boston so I've stood before it many times - with and without insight. Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going? Next time will be the charm. MLou Dear Administrator:

A check sent to Curry works well, or paypal to aghunter@comcast.net - just please remember to let me have your address so I know where to send them. If you'd like perhaps to send a few words to Amazon.com in review, then I can send these out to you gratis (otherwise I have to charge). What do you think? People seem to be very excited by this book, too, which is gratifying because producing two books inside a year is exhausting. Now, the website is the next order of business.... Yours with a smile, Allan Dear Jean and Marnie,
