Let’s Get Real, part III

Posted on | August 25, 2009 |

I’ve just gone to my mailbox and deleted 113 items of spam.  At first I was a tad annoyed.  Some of this spam is designed to take up dozens of pages per item, clearly hoping to annoy me.  What can they possibly gain from this?  I have no idea.  Other items are attempting to sell me something, usually viagra. What makes them think I need it?

But then, you see, I am attempting to sell something, also.  I’m hoping to ’sell’ my ideas, so others can be tempted to think a bit more creatively.  I’d like to sell my books, too, but not simply to make money - rather, I’d like my readers to be able to get something positive from those pages; something that they might not otherwise have gained much access to.

That seems reasonable to me.  Yet I can’t work out what these spam merchants are trying to do. Obviously money comes into it somewhere.  I just can’t work out how or why.

I’m not trying to swamp them with nonsense.  So why are they trying to do that to me?  Puzzling. And thus our freedom to think, undisturbed, is attacked. Daily.  Anyone else fed up?
