Something for nothing

Posted on | August 11, 2009 |

We’ve been attempting to grow organic tomatoes again this year, and it hasn’t been successful because of the weather. So I was eyeing the five tomatoes we actually have when I noticed one was missing and then I saw….

Which let me know several things. First, the tomatoes were ripe. Second, I’m not the only one who has an interest in them. Third, nature was here long before me, and I’d do well to remember that.

What a gift, though, to have that handed to me in one image.

    Dear Allan,
Nature was testing you - and you passed the test ! You are a gracious host !
Tim and I lost our tomatoes to the blight. He had built a fence around his raised garden to keep out the rabbits and the groundhogs and the deer - it never occurred to us that the squirrels would be interested in the veggies also !!! ( and of course we had no idea that there would be a blight)
One thing we’ve learned through the beekeeping and the gardening - living off the land would not be an easy way of life.
Hope you have the opportunity to enjoy your other four tomatoes.
    My turn to smile,
    Jean

    Dear Jean,
I just love the gentleness of your approach to these things. Thanks for the comment - it would indeed be a major struggle to live off the land. that romantic idyll may be to tough for the likes of me…
I’m sorry about the blight. How are the bees in this time of bee-shortages?
    Allan
