Shooting?

Posted on | April 4, 2009 |

So: yesterday three Pittsburgh police officers were killed by a man wearing a bullet proof vest and using an assault rifle.  Two other officers were wounded.  Also yesterday in Washington state a man shot his five children to death and then killed himself.  That’s nine deaths.  Two weeks earlier in Oakland CA four policemen were shot to death in what has been called the worst day for law enforcement since 9-11. These are all gun crimes. These used to be called massacres. Now they’re just another incident.  By comparison, nine Americans dead in Iraq in one day would raise serious questions.  ‘Our boys’ shouldn’t die in that way. And neither should our police, nor our civilians. After all, we are not at war here in the US. Perhaps now we should rethink gun laws?  How many more premeditated massacres do we need? There is a way forward, of course.  Simply arm our police so heavily that we can be pretty sure they’ll never be outgunned.  The trouble is, we’ve already tried that.  The man in Pittsbugh had a heavier, more deadly weapon and a bullet proof vest when he set his trap, and so three experienced police officers with modern guns were completely out-classed. Since we seem to have tried everything else, perhaps a weapons law needs to be considered.  Just in case it helps.
